What is the Board of Directors?

The California Garden Clubs, Inc.'s Board of Directors are the group of individuals that are elected by the member clubs, affiliates and associate plant societies of CGCI who are empowered to carry out the business of the organization and the tasks spelled out in the CGCI Bylaws. The CGCI board of directors is made up of
  • officers
  • district directors
  • members of the nominating committee
  • members of the board of trustees
  • members of the advisory council
  • members of bylaws committee
  • members of Circle of Poppies
  • chairmen of standing and special committees.

The Officers are elected every two years at the CGCI Annual Convention. The District Directors are elected by their individual districts. Circle of Poppy members are CGCI's highly honored recipients of the Circle of Poppies Award and are privileged to be members of the Board as long as they desire. The chairman are appointed by the President. CGCI is continually searching for interested and informed garden club members who would be willing to serve on the Board.

CGCI Board members do not receive a salary. The President and President-elect are required to travel to National Garden Club, Inc. meetings as well as Pacific Region of NGC meetings so a special travel stipend is allocated from the CGCI budget for this purpose. No compensation apart from a small expense budget (usually of $50) is offered to chairmen. A quarter of the chairman are not funded in any way and many chairman do not claim any of their budgeted allocation. District Directors in most cases receive funding from their home district according to the policy of their home district. In effect, most expenses are out-of-poclet for all Board members.

Board members are expected to attend regular meetings of the Board of Directors which are the convention meetings (pre-convention, convention, organizational and post-convention meetings held at the annual convention) and two Board meetings: one in the fall and one in the winter.

As the governing body of this corporation, the board of directors shall be and shall:

  • at no time modify action taken by members at the annual convention,
  • transact routine business,
  • adopt policies and procedures,
  • adopt standing rules, and
  • ratify all classes of membership.

Every member of the CGCI Board of Directors is a dedicated and hard-working volunteer motivated by their love og gardening and the desire to contribute to their community and to society. CGCI is indeed lucky to have such wonderful and able people willing to serve.
